The Irish Bridget at Ventfort Hall
Ventfort Hall Association
104 Walker St
Lenox, MA 01240
Who was the Irish Bridget? What relevance does her story have to a historic house museum? Scholar Dr. Margaret Lynch-Brennan will have the answers when she presents a Tea and Talk based on her new book, The Irish Bridget: Irish Immigrant Women in Domestic Service in America, 1840-1930. Her presentation will be followed by a Victorian tea.
Young Irish immigrant women who labored as cooks, maids and nannies in middle and upper-class American homes were stock figures of ridicule in popular American magazines such as Harper’s Weekly. Lynch-Brennan will show photographs and read personal letters the Irish Bridgets wrote to one another to give insight into their lives. The speaker will discuss their work life in American homes, their social life and the impact these women had on Irish-American life.
Lynch-Brennan is currently a Public Scholar for the New York Council for the Humanities. She was a consultant to the Lower East Side Tenement House Museum in New York City on the interpretation of Irish immigrant Bridget Meehan Moore in the museum’s Moore family tenement. She taught at the elementary, secondary, undergraduate and graduate levels, and is retired from the New York State Education Department.
Tickets for “The Irish Bridget” Tea & Talk are $24 for advance reservations and $29 day of the event. Reservations are highly recommended as seating is limited. Mansion and Gilded Age Museum
Open Year Round
104 Walker Street
Lenox, Massachusetts 01240
“Don’t Wine If You Are Murdered!” takes on poisonous implications when The Comical Mystery Theater Tour ensemble returns to the mansion. The troupe is back by popular demand for another Murder Mystery Dinner Theater program.
Helena Handbasket is hosting a Wine Tasting with world-famous Wine Connoisseur U. Paul McCork, who is showing off his talents. Apparently, his talents aren’t limited to wine! He has managed to upset some people and someone decides he shouldn’t make it to his next appearance. Is it Helena or his assistant Manny Shevit, who wants to move up in the wine world? Or could it have been Booby Vintage, a fierce rival of Paul’s, or Vera Goodyear, a mysterious young woman with a questionable past? The audience is invited to help solve the mystery of who popped Paul’s cork for the last time.
In production since 1995, The Comical Mystery Theater Tour ensemble, that has appeared at the mansion to sold-out audiences, has had over 50,000 audience members attending their programs.
Tickets for “Don’t Wine If You Are Murdered!” are $35 per person including a full-course dinner with a cash bar for beer and wine. Reservations required by Monday, January 23rd.
